Film Quick Review: The Station Agent

Though its star is, in fact, a dwarf, the film never goes the heavyhanded route in preaching to us about his life struggles. Instead of a sappy PSA, we're given what feels like a truer-to-life portrayal, especially because of the film's slow, simplistic, day-in-the-life-of style. The result is a potent experience, deftly handled, as the protagonist finds himself slowly embracing his fellow man after shunning society for most of his life. Watching him and his two new friends live normal lives together, never affecting nor being affected by much of real consequence, has rarely been more engaging than in this prime example of a "quiet film" free of overbearing melodrama and overly complex story arcs.

Score: 8.5
