Film Quick Review: The Day After Tomorrow

Though its vast, world-scale disaster story is meteorologically impossible, and its dialogue admittedly hokey, The Day After Tomorrow's visual excellence almost lifts the movie on its own. There isn't much else to lift up a movie that adheres to the Hollywood convention that characters that should be smart, like the Vice President of the United States, are actually stupid, while characters like young teenagers are indeed the smart ones. But watching multiple tornados rip apart Los Angeles and tsunamis flood New York skyscrapers is so absolutely and purely thrilling on a visual level that at times the plot almost seems unnecessary. In that sense, this is the perfect summer popcorn flick, no more, no less.

Score: 6.5
