Geocaching

Have you heard about the latest craze? It's called Geocaching and I want in! Here are the basics: GPS users have formed a game called Geocaching wherein they create secret caches (usually with guest logs and trinket prizes) and place them around their community, with sentimental, historical, and/or beautiful locations an ideal. The cache creators then post up the coordinates for other GPS users to find and locate the cache.

Simply providing the coordinates doesn't make it as easy as you might think, since the GPS units will only be able to take you within several feet of the cache, and the cache ought to be hidden from view. Once someone locates it, they're free to take whatever is in it, usually with the unspoken agreement that they replace the prize(s) with something of their own. They then go back and confirm the find to the cache owner and record it on the Geocaching website.

I don't believe that there are any big prizes to be won; it doesn't seem to be a direct competition in any way. The whole point of Geocaching is simply to get people to go out and explore their cities. They've even got one right near by me to get started: the Granada Hills welcome sign! Now it's time for me to go buy a li'l' GPS unit... Who wants to join me on a few city-scouring adventures?
